A very interesting question with the ageing population and the speed that things change...
Logitech used to do a remote called the Harmony with a touch screen for "activities" which would mean 1 press to watch TV through TiVo (switches both devices on and to the right source etc). So when something in the set up changed, say a new TV, you just programmed the codes for the new device in. The user (in this case elderly relative) had the same control interface as before, so everything would of worked fine.
Of course it got upgraded and is now a much less intuitive device, but the replacement fulfills the same function.
Remotes at their inception were simple devices and there was far less choice of channels, no SKY no VM. So it pretty much made no difference when you changed your telly, the remote was very similair. Nowadays its got to be an issue for lots of differently abled groups in society.
In the case in point, obviously its a matter of time until the Samsung box meets a grisly end same as the Scientific Atlanta boxes.
Maybe there's a need for a simplified control set, common across brands so that people who find it hard to adjust can at least keep pace...Or a device that maps IR commands from an old remote to control a new device? Hmm....whats the number of the patent office?
